THE STORY BEHIND COP26.

Aspiring to create an experience to virtually demonstrate the possibilities of the future of construction and architecture, the overarching Scottish Timber Initiative – supported by Edinburgh Napier University’s Centre for Offsite Construction & Innovative Structures (COCIS), ECOSystems Technologies, the University of Edinburgh, SNRG, and BSW Group – showcased three builds at BE-ST (formerly CSIC) as part of the COP26 event in Glasgow on 31st October – 12 November 2021.

This initiative was dedicated to digital transformation in the construction industry, applied innovation in timber technology and the democratisation of sustainable, healthy building solutions.

THE UNEXPECTED PROBLEM.

Nowadays, construction methods don’t take into consideration collaboration spaces, connection with the outdoors and sustainability in their planning. There should be ways to optimise productivity while also maintaining a higher level of satisfaction and human connection with and within the environment.

It’s difficult to find effective ways to deliver this message, especially when visiting a site or an exhibition, similarly to the one hosted by BE-ST (formerly CSIC) at COP26. This ought to change to improve environmental understanding and awareness.

THE DIGITALNAUTS SOLUTON.

To find a way to bridge the gap between digital learning and environmental awareness, we create the Augmented Reality (AR) app “Transforming Timber”, within the bigger “Transforming Timber” project. We proposed this AR solution for attendees at the COP26 or potential prospects who are interested in finding out more about the Sustainable Timber Initiative and the projects undertaken by ECOSystems Technologies.

The aim of this project is to raise awareness of the impact that using sustainable timber has on the environment as well as showcase three core projects: GenZero – UK Gov Dept for Education project to deliver kit of parts zero carbon school project, NearHome – a Transport Scotland project funded by the Scottish Government to provide sustainable working space near people’s places of residence, and SNRG Demonstrator – exploring the mainstream use of homegrown timber in the construction sector.

THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION.

To find a way to bridge the gap between digital learning and environmental awareness, we created the Augmented Reality (AR) app “Transforming Timber”, within the bigger “Transforming Timber” project. We proposed this AR solution for attendees at the COP26 or potential prospects who are interested in finding out more about the Sustainable Timber Initiative and the projects undertaken by ECOSystems Technologies.

Attendees will have the opportunity to get an educational experience highlighting the inner workings of the onsite demonstrators which can only be delivered using AR technologies. This will create a meaningful and memorable impact that will last. The attendees can also access the current experience, as well as future developments, outside of COP26 via a mobile application that you can find on the Android Google Store. The main objective is for users to leave the event with a solid understanding of the Timber Initiative and Transforming projects.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE PLAYTHROUGH.

In this 4-minutes playthrough of the app, you can have a look at Transforming Timber in action. If you stick around until the very end, you also get to see AR in the real world!

WHAT THEY WROTE ABOUT OUR AR APP.

Transforming the UK’s approach to homegrown timber

The Transforming Timber initiative, led by Construction Scotland Innovation Centre, aims to boost the use of homegrown sustainable timber in mainstream construction projects. It has now secured funding to create a demonstrator home ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference taking place in Glasgow
